Lying at an elevation of 5359 m above the sea level, Khardung La Pass is the gateway to Nubra valley and Shyok Valleys. Arguably the world’s highest motorable road, this pass is one of the most-popular attractions of Ladakh. The pass offers magnificent views of the vicinity and is positioned at a distance of around 40 km from the Leh town. Also known as the ‘Pass of Lower Castle’, it was opened for automobiles in 1988, and since then the area is a preferred destination for expeditions by motor biking enthusiasts. Biking enthusiasts from all around the world visit this pass for a lifetime memorable experience. Once you reach the mountain pass, you can spot differently-colored Tibetan prayer flags fluttering and adding charm to the already enchanting view.

There is an army canteen also that serves refreshments and tea. If you want, you can also get your hands on some memento from the nearby souvenir shop. Khardungla Pass also has a historical significance as it is associated with the fact that this lies on the Caravan Route that connects Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia. Earlier, camels and horses were used to cover the distances and supply valuable and goods. Today, the pass is of logistic important to the Indian Army and is used for carrying supplies to Siachen Glacier.

The weather near Khardung La keeps changing. Having this said, make sure you are prepared to face difficult weather conditions as well. However, the best time to visit Khardung La Pass is between May and October when the weather is less unpredictable.
